Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release

BOARDMAN, OH (Friday, September 26th, 2008) - The Mahoning Valley Phantoms have no games scheduled this weekend, so they'll be taking the time to get out and volunteer in the community. On Sunday Phantom players will be working with the Davis Family YMCA in Boardman, volunteering as course guides for the 2008 Equalizer Race.

The Equalizer Race is a four-mile age graded race where the runners' finish time is adjusted by their age, which means that anyone from age 8 to 88 has a chance to win the race. In fact, last year's men's division was won by 83 year old Lou Lodovico, whose adjusted four mile time was 19:39!

Phantoms Head Coach and General Manager Bob Mainhardt says the team always loves to work the Equalizer.

"The Equalizer is a really great event," Mainhardt says, "and this is our fourth year [volunteering at the race]. Our team has a great history of supporting the YMCA and this year's Equalizer is another way that we keep our bond with them strong."

Registration begins for the Equalizer at 7:00 A.M. on Sunday at the Davis Family YMCA on McClurg Road in Boardman, with the race starting at 9:00 A.M. Phantom players will be on hand until the race is finished, helping all race participants stay on course from start to finish.

"It's great to be able to get out there and help out," says Phantoms forward Johnny Meo. "It feels good to not just be a part of a hockey team but also be a part of the Youngstown community and give back to all the people who come out to see us every weekend."

The Phantoms are committed to being actively involved in the community in the Mahoning Valley. In addition to the YMCA, the Phantoms also give their time to local agencies for the

United Way , Relay for Life, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the American Red Cross, Toys for Tots and others.

The Phantoms return to action October 3rd when they travel to Detroit to take on the Motor City Machine.
