Traverse City North Stars News Release
BOARDMAN, Ohio - According to head coach/GM Anthony Palumbo, the Traverse City North Stars were outhustled, outplayed and generally outdone on Friday night at the Boardman IceZone following a 4-1 loss to Mahoning Valley in the opening contest of a three-game weekend in suburban Youngstown.
The Phantoms (27-10-3) expanded their lead in the NAHL North Division to four points over Traverse City, which fell to 24-10-5 and snapped a six-game winning streak.
"We got outworked, plain and simple," Palumbo lamented. "They made it 4-1 with that empty-netter, but it could have been 7-1 or 8-1. They beat us in every battle, to every puck, in every facet of the game. We actually looked intimidated out there."
Mahoning Valley rattled off a pair of goals in the first 7:10 of action on Friday, and after Kyle Jean (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/TC North Stars) recorded an unassisted shorthanded tally in the first minute of the second period, the host Phantoms kept Traverse City off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
With Alpena's 5-4 win over Motor City on Friday, the IceDiggers leapfrogged Team USA into third place, a mere six points behind the North Stars. Team USA and fifth-place Marquette were idle.
"There are still four points out there this weekend, but we'll have to come back as a totally different team tomorrow," Palumbo said. "Tonight - that was a lot of nothing."
The North Stars and Phantoms square off again Saturday evening before wrapping with a Sunday matinee at the IceZone.
