Boardman, Ohio (Sunday, November 21, 2004) -- Tonight the Youngstown Phantoms Junior-A hockey club dropped a 2-1 decision to the USA National Team in an overtime shootout at The Ice Zone. The two teams began the day tied for first place in the North American Hockey League's North Division.
Team USA led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by defenseman Trent Palm at the 7:58-mark. Youngstown out-shot the visitors, 16-6, in the second 20 minutes of action, but failed to get on the scoreboard. The Phantoms finally managed to tie the game at the 12:20-mark of the third period on a goal by defenseman Mark Zarbo. However, there was no further scoring in regulation or the five-minute overtime period. In the shootout, Team USA scored on three of its four attempts as Rhett Rakhshani, Jamie McBain and Patrick Kane all put the puck behind Youngstown netminder Jerry Kuhn. Meanwhile, Aaron Rhyner was the only one of the four Youngstown shooters who beat Team USA's Joseph Palmer.
"If we play this way all the time, this is going to be a great season," Phantoms' Head Coach & General Manager Bob Mainhardt said. "We played disciplined and we executed well, it just wasn't in the cards for us tonight. But this was an excellent, excellent hockey game."
Youngstown (12-5-1, 25 points) earned a point in the standings for the regulation tie and now trails Team USA (13-5-0, 26 points) by a single point in the NAHL North. The Phantoms will be back in action on Wednesday, November 24 when they travel to Toledo for a 7:30 p.m. game versus the Ice Diggers. Next weekend Youngstown will host the Soo Indians in a pair of 7:00 p.m. games at The Ice Zone on Friday, November 26 and Saturday, November 27. Tickets for the games against the Soo -- and all Phantoms' home games -- are available by calling (330) 965-7500 or visiting The Ice Zone, which is located at 360 McClurg Road in Boardman.
