Phantoms Fall at Senators

Binghamton, NY - The Adirondack Phantoms opened the 2010-11 season, presented by Bud Light, at the Binghamton Senators Friday night and dropped a hard-fought 5-1 decision to their East Division rivals.

2009-10 MVP Johan Backlund excelled in net for the Phantoms turning away 44 of 49 Senators shots including several impressive stops to keep Adirondack in the game. Patrick Maroon lit the lamp on the power play for the first Phantoms goal of the year. Maroon's goal in the 3rd period came on a smooth and easy cross-ice feed from Dan Jancevski on the left point who receives a cross-ice pass of his own from Mike Testwuide. It was the first professional point for Testwuide, the talented rookie out of Colorado College.

Binghamton benefited from Adirondack's frequency in the penalty box as they converted on three of their eight power play chances.

Marc-Andre Bourdon had an especially strong game for the Phantoms including several big shots from the point.

The Phantoms had a fine chance to get the early lead in the first period when they had 1:13 worth of 5-on-3 power play time. But a few close calls didn't result in a score as Binghamton and goalie Mike Brodeur were able to kill off the two key Phantoms advantages.

Cory Bass deflected a drive from Andre Benoit for a power play goal and Kaspars Daugavins scored a couple minutes later for a 2-0 lead after one period. Binghamton had four of their eight power plays in the opening period.

Adirondack looked especially impressive on the penalty kill in the second period when they killed two full minutes of 5-on-3 times for the B-Sens. Backlund made a couple diving and scrambling saves, got assistance from the post on one shot, and his frenetic penalty killers were able to get just enough of some shots and passes to frustrate Binghamton's attack.

Mike Brodeur left the game late in the 3rd after he collided with his own teammate as Adirondack rookie Andrew Rowe beat both in a race to the puck. Brodeur got the win with a fine performance including 27 saves on 28 Phantoms shots that had him scrambling. Barry Brust came on in relief to close out the game. Jim O'Brien in the 2nd and Bobby Butler in the 3rd also scored for Binghamton.

The matchup was the first of eight in 2010-11 between Binghamton and Adirondack. The Phantoms travel back to Broome County on Saturday, November 6th.

Adirondack continues their season-opening three game road swing Saturday at the Albany Devils at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Adirondack's first home games of the 2010-11 regular season, presented by Bud Light, will be Friday, October 15th and Saturday, October 16th.
