PGCBL Announces 2018 All-League Selections

August 13, 2018 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) News Release

UTICA, N.Y. - The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League announced its yearly All-League teams on Monday afternoon, honoring the best players in the PGCBL during the 2018 season. The teams were selected by a vote of all 13 head coaches in the league, and were picked from nominations submitted by each team.

Both the First and Second Teams are made up of one player at each position, as well as a utility/designated hitter selection. Four starting pitchers and two relief pitchers were also selected. Due to a tie in the voting, five starting pitchers were named Second Team All-PGCBL.

The Amsterdam Mohawks placed four players on the All-PGCBL First Team. Shane Muntz (Wake Forest) and Elvis Peralta (Marshall) were selected as the top catcher and shortstop in the league, respectively. League coaches named Peyton Plumlee (Mississippi State) and Zack Durant (Herkimer) as two of the top three starting pitchers in the PGCBL, as well. Amsterdam, who also placed relief pitcher Ryan McLinskey on the second team, had the lowest ERA in the league by more than 40 points.

Three position players from the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs, who led the PGCBL in hits, batting average, on base percentage found their way onto the First Team. League home run and RBI champion Ryan Toohers (Villanova), as well as batting average champion Ryan Hernandez (San Jacinto CC), were selected at first base and designated hitter, while Austin Pollack (Hofstra) earned an outfield spot. Each of the four DiamondDawgs named among the league's best, including Second Team selection Joseph Castellanos, were position players.

Numerous other league leaders were selected to the year-end teams, including the league champions in runs scored and hits (Castellanos), slugging percentage (Allen Murphy from the Newark Pilots), extra-base hits (Khalyd Cox of the Utica Blue Sox), wins (Mason Hazelwood from Elmira and Jack Buckley from Watertown), and strikeouts (Hazelwood).

All 13 PGCBL teams had at least one player selected to the All-PGCBL teams, with ten of the 13 seeing a player named to the First Team. Five teams - Amsterdam, Mohawk Valley, the Watertown Rapids, the Albany Dutchmen, and the Utica Blue Sox had three or more players selected, with four of those teams making the PGCBL Playoffs.
