Long Beach Armada News Release

LONG BEACH, CA June 30, 2006- Samone Peters drove in three runs on two doubles and Bud Smith (1-2) picked up his first win in an Armada uniform as Long Beach (15-11) won the series opener over Yuma (12-16) 6-2.

Yuma took a 2-0 lead after three and half innings but the Armada came right back on Peters' two-run double off the top of the centerfield wall. Peters would then score on sacrifice fly in a spectacular collision with Scorpion catcher Jacob Guzman.

"Darrell said, 'go if you want to,'" said Peters. "I said 'I'm gonna score right here.'"

The 6-foot-9-inch, 285-pound Peters barreled through the 6-foot, 220-pound Guzman. Guzman dropped the ball and the Armada took the lead 3-2.

"Two-two game, short fly ball, his only play is to run him over," said Smith. "The whole momentum of the game changed right there."

Smith went the first six innings giving up two runs on eight hits. He struck out five with no walks and left with a 3-2 lead.

"I don't think about wins and losses," said Smith. "I just want to go out and try to give a quality start."

Smith's post-game comments accurately demonstrate the kind of character he brings to this Armada team.

"[Smith's] the most humble individual on this team," said Peters. "Bud has been pitching great all year. We just haven't given him any run support. Tonight we got some runs for him and the win."

With the game still in doubt in the seventh and Long Bach holding to a one-run lead, reliever Brian Hoff got out of a first-and-third with one out jam on a grounder double play ball.

Randall Shelley's infield, run-scoring single in the eighth chased Chris Langois (2-3) from the game and gave the Armada a 4-2 lead. Then RBI doubles by Peters and Jeremy Hernadez made it 6-2. Langois struck out nine but gave up five hits and up five runs.

Brian Hoff and closer Mike Peck, in a non-save situation, pitched exceptionally in relief to give the Armada their fourth win this season over Yuma going back to last week's sweep.

Ryan Webb extended his hit streak to 16 games with a base hit in the third inning for the Armada.

The home stand concludes with three more games against Yuma, Saturday at 6 p.m., Sunday at 5 p.m. and Monday at 6 p.m. Monday night will be the big Independence Day party including face painters, a parrot display, and a huge fireworks show after the game.
