CHARLOTTE, NC (November 30, 2010) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Matt Whitehead of the Pensacola Ice Flyers is the SBK Player of the Week for November 22-28.
Whitehead scored seven goals in three games as the Ice Flyers went 2-1 last week.
On Thursday, the Newmarket, Ontario native scored his sixth goal of the season, which turned out to be the game-winner in a 4-3 win over Louisiana. Whitehead came back the next night and recorded his first professional hat trick in a 6-5 loss to Mississippi. Not content with that performance, Whitehead became the first player in SPHL history to record hat tricks on consecutive nights when he scored three times in Pensacola's 6-5 win over Louisiana.
The 26-year-old Whitehead, who played four years of college hockey at SUNY-Oswego, joined the Ice Flyers last December and finished as the team's fourth-leading scorer with 36 points in only 36 games.
