Penn FC News Release
HARRISBURG, Pa - Despite an early two-goal advantage for the Charlotte Independence (9-11-12), Penn FC (9-14-9) battled back to end the match in a 2-2 draw.
A fast break opportunity in the 17th minute opened up the scoring for Charlotte. As goalkeeper Romuald Peiser found himself well outside the box attempting to counteract the fast break, a deflection off his body was exploited by Ãamon Zayed who fired a shot into the open goal.
Zayed's offensive aggressiveness was noticed again just 12 minutes later as he capitalized off a cross from Derek Gebhard to give the Independence a two goal advantage.
With 16 minutes remaining in the first half, Penn FC mounted its comeback. Launching multiple offensive strikes, the Blue and White closed the gap with back to back goals from Kyle Venter and Lucky Moksana.
Rush Soccer's First Team found its first opportunity off a free kick from Richard Menjivar. The leading facilitator lofted a ball from just outside the right side of the box to find the head of Venter. Venter directed the ball right past the hands of goalkeeper Brandon Miller to get Penn FC on the board.
With one minute remaining in the first half, Menjivar worked his magic once again. Launching another ball from the right wing, Mkosana darted towards the net and sent a header right into the left corner to find the equalizer.
Both teams were hungry for the go-ahead goal in the second half which led to a back and forth battle on both sides of the pitch. Paulo Junior led Penn FC's offensive strikes, finding himself one-on-one with the goalie in the 74th minute. Miller protected the net with a kick save to preserve the stalemate.
As the match was coming to a close without a leader, Junior struck again but Miller was able to force another deflection. Miguel Jaime rushed towards the deflection, but sent the ball just high of the net, ending the match at a 2-2 draw.
Penn FC returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 9 to take on New York Red Bulls II in the penultimate match of the 2018 season. Kickoff at FNB Field is set for 6:30 p.m. Tickets to Tuesday's match as well as the final match of the 2018 season are available at pennfc.com/tickets.
