Penn FC News Release
HARRISBURG, Pa - Penn FC's (9-14-8) hopes of bringing home the hardware from the Keystone Derby Cup fell short after a 2-0 defeat against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (15-4-11) during the intrastate rubber match Wednesday night.
After a roughly 90 minute rain delay at FNB Field, both teams took the pitch ready to battle, but the match would remain scoreless until the 38th minute. Pittsburgh's Kay Banjo opened up the scoring off of a deflected cross in the middle of the box. The forward darted into the opening with just enough time to tap the ball past the hands of Penn FC goalkeeper Sean Lewis for the go-ahead goal.
Rush Soccer's First team threatened early in the second half. Midfielder Richard Menjivar fired a free kick from just outside the center of the box that sailed past the defensive wall but was saved by the Pittsburgh goalkeeper.
Penn FC mounted multiple counter attacks but it didn't prove to be enough to close the gap. A defensive hold from the Blue and White held the team to only a one goal disadvantage, but the team could not find the equalizer deep into the second half.
In the third minute of extra time, Riverhounds SC doubled its lead to guarantee three points. Pittsburgh's Andrew Lubahn sprinted down the middle, sending the ball to winger Neco Brett who one-timed it right back to Lubahn's foot on a give and go. Lubahn grounded one into the back of the net to close out the 2018 Keystone Derby Cup in favor of Pittsburgh.
Penn FC returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 3 to take on the Charlotte Independence in the seventh match of The Homestretch. Kickoff at FNB Field is set for 6:30 p.m. Tickets to Wednesday's match as well as the final three matches of regular season play are available at pennfc.com/tickets.
