Pelicans Swept by Fireflies in De-Facto Doubleheader

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (13-25, 40-62) dropped both games of the de-facto doubleheader against the Columbia Fireflies (19-17, 52-49) 3-1 in game one, and 5-0 in game two on Wednesday night at Segra Park.

Game One

The first game of the twin-bill was the continuation of Tuesday night's game, that was suspended in the bottom of the third with the score 0-0 due to rain. Before the weather rolled in, the Chicago Cubs 2026 second round pick Caden Sorrell notched his first hit of his pro career, a single up the middle.

On Wednesday afternoon the game was resumed. The Fireflies scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch, to give Columbia a 1-0 lead.

The Pelicans tied the game up in the top of the sixth. With Sorrell on third, a wild pitch brought home the runner from third to knot the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the sixth with two runners on, Sean Gamble smacked a two-run double to give the Fireflies a 3-1 advantage and ultimately the win.

RHP Jesus Oliveira (1-0, 9.00) received the win for the Fireflies. RHP David Bracho (2-4, 6.95) was tagged with the loss. RHP Andy Basora (S,5) received the save.

Game Two

The Fireflies started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Camden Johnson and Josh Hammond lined singles to lead off the frame. Then Yandel Ricardo grounded out which allowed Johnson to score, which made the game 1-0. The next batter Gamble reached on a throwing error that brought in Hammond to increase the Fireflies to 2-0.

In the bottom of the third, Columbia's offense struck again. Ricardo walked and then moved to second on a wild pitch. In the ensuing at-bat, Gamble roped an RBI single to move the score to 3-0. Then Jhosmmel Zue lined a single to advance Gamble to second. Following a double steal, JC Vanek hit a two-run single which gave the Fireflies a 5-0 advantage.

RHP Jhon Reyes (2-3, 8.76) received the win for the Fireflies. RHP Emilio Ramos (1-4, 7.61) was tagged with the loss for the Pelicans.

Myrtle Beach will continue their six-game set against the Columbia Fireflies (Single-A Kansas City Royals) on Thursday, August 6 at Segra Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM. RHP Daniel Avitia (2-3, 4.41) will start on the hill for the Pelicans. RHP Ryan McDonagh (2-3, 4.45) gets the ball for the Fireflies.
