Myrtle Beach, SC-The Salem Avalanche, Class Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, was stifled by a seven-inning performance from Myrtle Beach starter Tommy Hanson Thursday night in a 13-1 series-opening win for the Pelicans. Myrtle (12-9) scored six runs in the fourth to jet past Salem (10-10).
The Avalanche trailed in the first for the fourth straight game when Brandon Hicks launched a solo home run with one out against David Qualben. Later, Ernesto Mejia rolled a two-run single to center to make the score 3-0.
In the second, An RBI groundout from Tyler Flowers and two Salem errors gave the Pelicans a 5-0 edge. Then, in the fourth, Myrtle sent 10 batters to the plate, tallierd five extra base hits and scored six runs to advance the lead to 11-0.
All the while, Hanson dazzled Avs batters, surrendering a late run on just four total hits. The right-hander is 3-0 and has yielded just the one run in 29 innings this season.
For Salem, Jordan Parraz walked in the seventh to push his Carolina League-leading on-base streak to 17 games. Tim Torres went 0-for-4 to stop his nine-game hit streak.
The teams meet again Friday as Salem lefty Polin Trinidad opposes Pelican rightj-hander Deunte Heath.
