Philadelphia Force News Release

Lowell, MA- The 2007 Philadelphia Force took their show on the road for the first time this season. The Force were knocked off by the New England Riptide in game one of a four game series by a score of 7-3.

The Riptide jumped out to a 7-0 lead through four innings. Shortstop Jessica Merchant delivered a two-run double in the third and had three RBIs on the night to lead the Riptide offense. Former Force second baseman Carri Leto-Martin had a solid game against her former mates by going 2-for-3 and scoring a run.

Kristina Thorson (3-2) and Margo Pruis split time in the circle with Thorson getting the start. They both pitched three innings and each faced 18 batters with Thorson picking up a strike out.

In the fifth inning, center fielder Sharonda McDonald and right fielder Trena Peel sparked some life into the Force. McDonald led off the inning with a double. Peel, who scored two of the three runs, smacked her second home run of the season, a deep shot to right field that would cut the score to 7-2. The home run by Peel extended her hitting streak to five games.

The Force (6-7) would add one more in the seventh and again Peel was involved. This time she started the inning by drawing a walk against Riptide (10-7) pitcher Tarrah Beyster, who replaced starter Eileen Canney (3-1), who pitched the first six innings. Shortstop Chelsea Spencer, the league's leading hitter, singled to move Peel to third base. Third baseman Clare Burnum would drive in Peel with an RBI fielder's choice groundout.

Spencer had two hits and raised her average to .474. She also was hit by a pitch.

First baseman Kellie Wilkerson was walked twice. She has walked six times in the last three games.

Game two of the series at Martin Softball Field is set for Thursday night at 7:05.
