Peanuts Sweep Doubleheader, Move Closer to First Half Championship
July 5, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release
The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, lowered the team's magic number for a first half championship to one with two victories over Bradenton on Thursday night. South Georgia won the first game 6-5 and the second 4-1.
The first game ended up going nine innings despite being scheduled for seven. The game was a make-up from a rain-out that occurred in Bradenton so South Georgia served as the road team batting first in the inning. The Peanuts were down one run going into the top of the seventh inning but Mike Caruso singled Jasha Balcom in to tie the game at five apiece. In the top of the ninth, Caruso struck again as he hit had a base hit to score Joey Hooft from third, which ended up being the game winning run.
In the first game, Caruso led the way going 3-4 with three RBI. Brandon Woolard went 2-5 with one run and two RBI while Johnny Washington went 2-3 with one run and one RBI. Both Washington and Woolard had home runs. Jake Upwood got the win after pitching two innings of relief and not allowing a single hit. Upwood took the win to move to 2-0.
In the second game, South Georgia once again served as the home team. The Peanuts put up a run in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Hooft went 2-4 with two runs and two stolen bases and was the only Peanut with more than one hit. Mike Colacchio got the start and pitched four innings allowing just one run. Jared Doyle finished the game pitching three innings allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
The two teams play another double header on Friday beginning at 6:00. Jerome Gamble will make his Peanuts debut in game one and Chris Webb will start the second game. First pitch is set for 6:10. Tickets are still available at the Peanuts box office or by logging onto southgeorgiapeanuts.com.
