Charlotte County Redfish News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Charlotte County Redfish dried off from their tough rain-shortened loss to take on the Aiken Foxhounds. The Redfish were down early but quickly responded as everything worked from pitching to hitting to defense as they jumped all over the Foxhounds and took the series opener, 7-1.
Redfish starter Michael Oberg (1-2) started off strong as he struck out the first batter he faced but the Foxhounds got a bunt single and earned two walks to load the bases. Oberg pitched himself out of the jam as Bradley Key skied a ball to centerfield into the waiting glove of Millard Dawson.
The teams went back and forth in the next few innings but couldn't advance a runner past third base. Through the first 3 innings, the Redfish stranded 3 base runners and the Foxhounds left 6 men on.
The Foxhounds though struck first in the bottom of the 4th inning. Reinaldo Ramirez singled to center and was sacrificed over by Reed Price (3-3), Aiken's starting pitcher. Scott Houin plated Ramirez with an RBI single to center and the Foxhounds took a 1-0 lead.
The Redfish didn't trail for long as they put them firmly in front in the bottom of the inning. Brad Thoma used his speed and bunted his way to first and Oberg laid down a perfect sacrifice to move him to second base. The Redfish did something that most teams have done against them this year as they staged a 2-out rally beginning with Dawson stroking an RBI single between the shortstop and third baseman. He stole second and Jason Hurst walked to put 2 on with two outs and Josh Murray coming to the plate. Murray drilled a shot to left centerfield that had 3-run home run written all over it and the Redfish were up 4-1.
The bullpen kept the Charlotte County out in front as Aaron Easton and Justin Wichert pitched great in relief. Oberg finished the night with 1 ER on 8 hits, 1 BB and 3 Ks in 5.0 innings of work. Easton struck out the side in his first inning of work in the 6th and only allowed 1 hit in his two innings out of the bullpen. Wichert continued the great relief with 2.0 strong innings of his own with a hit, a walk and 2 Ks.
PJ Lehmann though was the player of the game for the Redfish. Lehmann was substituted in for Thoma when the Foxhounds went to their bullpen and brought in righty reliever Gary Lee. Price lasted 5.1 innings with 4 ER on 8 hits and 1 strikeout. Lehmann ripped a single his first time up. Against Aiken reliever, Lehmann went 3-for-3 as he added a double, a triple and 2 RBIs and helped the Redfish reel in a victory by the score of 7-1.
The Redfish look to take the series tomorrow night, July 6th, against the Foxhounds. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
