Published on August 13, 2007 under Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release
(Dublin, CA. August 13, 2007) The Golden Baseball League announced 1B Peanut Williams of the Orange Coutny Flyers and RHP Dustin Gober of the Long Beach Armada have been named Player and Pitcher of Week 8. Sponsored by Spalding Baseball, these weekly awards recognize the most outstanding position player and pitcher in the league each week.
Peanut Williams, 29, and the reigning GBL MVP from the 2006 season, was selected as the player of the week for his offensive prowess. He led the GBL last week in Home Runs (5), Runs Scored (11), RBIs (13) and in Slugging Average (.848) as his team gained three games on the leaders in the race for the second half championship. This is Williams second season in the GBL and follows a 2006 year where he set a new GBL single season record in home runs with 20 and garnered the 2006 MVP award. Originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 6th round of the 1996 amateur draft our of high school, the Nacogdoches native Texan was a slugging sensation in the low minors and reached as high as AA San Antonio in the Texas League before being released. Besides the GBL, he has also played in the independent Northern, Atlantic, Cenral and Fronter League - where he had his contract purchased by the Chicago White Sox in 2004.
Dustin Gober, 24, the right-handed starting rookie pitcher for the Long Beach Aramada, has been selected as Pitcher of the Week. Gober posted a record of 2-0 during the week with an E.R.A of 1.88. He went 14 innings druing his two starts and struck out 11 while only walking 4. Gober was the top pitcher for the NCAA Division II Cal State Domingues Hills team in 2006 as he led the team in E.R.A while batters hit a palty .117 against him, but was overlooked in the amateur draft. He played in the 2007 Arizona Winter League for the Sonora Surf Dawgs on the recommendation of top independent baseball scout John "Monty" Montgomery. In the AWL he impressed Long Beach Armada scouts as he was named an All-Star while posting a 2.74 E.R.A and finished second in the league in strikeouts. He was the last player released out of spring training by the Armada, but quickly resigned a few weeks into the season as Armada pitchers began to get acquired by major league teams. Originally used in relief, he moved into the starting rotation when Long Beach Armada ace Jeremy Zick was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays -- since then he has run his record to an undefeated 5-0.
