Charleston, SC. Charleston Battery forward Randi Patterson scored in the 85th minute to lift Charleston over the Montreal Impact in a closely fought game Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium. The game looked to be headed to a draw but Patterson pounced on a loose ball in the box after a scramble and blasted a shot past Montreal goalkeeper Matt Jordan.

With the win the Battery (3-1-2, 11 points) moves into a tie for first place in the USL First Division.

The goal was Patterson's team-leading fourth of the season; he scored twice in last Friday's 3-1 win versus the Miami FC Blues.

The game started slowly and neither side registered a shot on target during the first half. Battery midfielder Osvaldo Alsonso fired high in the 3rd minute; his opposite number Pat Leduc did the same for Montreal five minutes later.

The best chance of the half came to Charleston from a corner-kick in the 21st minute. Mike Richardson whipped the ball to the back post but Kevin Nylen could only manage to direct the ball over the bar with his headed attempt.

After half-time Montreal began to enjoy more possession and forced the first save of the game at the hour mark. Veteran midfielder Mauro Biello worked himself into a shooting position from ten yards out with a neat turn. Biello's shot was on-frame but straight at Charleston goalkeeper Keith Wiggans who made a comfortable save.

In the 75th minute substitute forward Lazo Alavanja played a clever ball through to Patterson from the edge of the box. As Montreal appealed for offside Patterson pulled his shot wide of the target.

The goal came with five minutes remaining after a sustained period of Battery pressure. Alonso hit the first shot but his strike was blocked by defender Stefano Pesoli. Patterson moved to the loose ball and fired into the top-right corner of the goal with a hard right-footed shot.

Charleston heads to Rochester, NY Saturday night for a 7:35 PM game versus the Rochester Rhinos; the game is available in Charleston at REAL 1340 AM or on the web at www.USLLive.com.
