Albany Patroons News Release
Albany, NY - June 15, 2006 - The Albany Patroons Inc. announced today that they will extend their season of professional basketball at the Armory Sports and Convention Arena from four months to six months. This extension is a result of the Albany Patroons Inc. purchasing a franchise in the United States Basketball League (USBL). The USBL season occurs shortly after the end of the CBA season, beginning in mid-April and runs through late June.
The USBL has sent 150 players to the NBA. Amongst those are Dallas Mavericks head coach, Avery Johnson, Adrian Griffin, and Darrel Armstrong. Avery Johnson is currently coaching Adrian Griffin and Darrell Armstrong on the Mavericks. The Mavericks are playing in the NBA finals. Some other former USBL players include Manute Bol, Spud Webb, Michael Adams, Sam Mitchell, and John "Hot Rod" Williams.
The new Albany franchise in the USBL was the former Pennsylvania Valleydawgs. The Pennsylvania team had fallen on bad economic times and the Albany Patroons Inc. wished to extend Professional basketball at the Armory. The team will retain the name of the Albany Patroons in the USBL, the same name as in the CBA. The team will complete the away schedule and be able to participate in the 2006 Post Season Championship to be held in Dodge City, Kansas, June 23rd to 25th. Patroons owner, Ben Fernandez states, "This is great for our local Albany fans. It gives them the opportunity to see more exciting Patroons basketball through an extended season".
Executive Vice President and General Manager, Jim Coyne states, "This will give us all an opportunity to see additional Professional basketball players play in the Armory. The Armory shall have at least 50 professional, exhibition, and high school basketball games each year".
The USBL plays 30 games in a season, with 15 home games and 15 away games.
Assistant coach of the Albany Patroons, Derrick Rowland, has been named head coach of the USBL's Albany Patroons.
