The Albany Patroons changed pace in tonights contest with the Gary Steelheads as for the first time this USBL home season, the Patroons held off their opponent to pick up the victory 93-83 at the Washington Avenue Armory.
Trailing by seven after the first period 24-17 Center Eric Williams poured in 12 points in the second quarter as the Albany defense limited the Steelheads to just 11 points in the period, as Albany pulled ahead at the half 44-35. The secondhalf saw Gary runs shut down by the Albany defense, which again limited CBA Patroon standout Jamario Moon to a lone forth quarter basket. Moons bucket cut the lead to 5 at 76-71 with 6:30 left. Albany Guard Shawn Hawkins poured in 3 threes and a pair long range of 2's in the fourth for 13 of his 15 on the night to extend the Albany comfort range back to 10, 83-73 with 5:00 left. Fairfield Grad Deng Gai contributed a pair of critical blocked shots in the stretch and Ronald Ross came away with 3 steals in the final minutes to further stifle the Steelheads comeback attempts.
Gary's Louis White and Carl Edwards led all scorers with 21 each, Moon added 15 and Marlowe Currie canned 12. The Big E paced Albany with 20 on the night including going 8-8 from the charity stripe. Hawkins followed with 15, while Antoine Jordan who also hit 8 for 8 from the line, had 12 on the night. Cory Hightower added 11 while Gai and Ross contributed in double figures with 10 each.
Albany is now over the .500 mark at 6-5 while Gary drops to 7-3 in the USBL. The Patroons are on the road on Monday in Delaware, and return home to the Washington Avenue Armory on Friday Night to host the Brooklyn Kings. Tip off is at 7:35.
