Patroons Add Two, Drop Three

April 30, 2007 - United States Basketball League (USBL)
Albany Patroons News Release

Albany, NY - April 30, 2007 - The USBL's Albany Patroons most recent transactions include the addition of Deng Gai and former Patroon Eric Williams. Eric Williams rejoins the Patroons after ending the CBA season with the Pittsbrugh Xplosion. Williams opened the 2006-7 CBA season with the Albany Patroons, ranking among the league's leading free throw shooters as well as being named to the CBA All-Star Team. Williams played with the CBA's 2005-6 Yakama Sun Kings and the Idaho Stampede as well as the USBL's 2006 Kansas Cagerz. He has also spent time overseas in Finland. Eric Williams began his college career at Syracuse and then transferred to Massachusetts, graduating in 2002.

Deng Gai, a 6'9" forward, brings his NBA experience with the Philadelphia 76ers to the Albany Patroons. Gai was signed as a free agent by the 76ers in 2005, after graduating from Fairfield as a three-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and as number eight on the NCAA's all-time blocked shots list. He started all of his 100 career games with Fairfield, and as a senior was named first team All-MAAC, leading the nation in blocks (5.5 bpg). Deng Gai was originally an early entry candidate for the 2004 NBA Draft, and participated in the 2004 NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago before withdrawing his name. After Gai's stint with the 76ers, where he played with former Patroon James Thomas, he briefly played for the USBL's Dodge City Legend. He then went on to play for the Wilmington Sea Dawgs in the ABA. Deng Gai was the Albany Patroons second round selection (after T.J. Thompson) in the 2005 CBA Draft.

To make room for Eric Williams and Deng Gai, the Patroons released Shamon Antrum, Mohammed Woni, and Darius Mattear.
