PASL-Pro Weekly - Week 12

Published on February 2, 2011 under Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

The San Diego Sockers and Cincinnati Kings stayed far ahead of the class last weekend. San Diego (9-2) demolished Tijuana 13-6, a game that included a 10-goal run for the Sockers. Cincinnati (11-2) shut out Ohio, 6-0.

Both teams also set new franchise attendance records; San Diego had 3,120 at Del Mar Arena and Cincinnati had over 1,400 at Cincinnati Gardens.

The Kings can clinch their third straight Eastern Division crown with a win over Illinois Friday and a Detroit loss to Louisville.

The Sockers have one hurdle left in their quest for a second straight Western Division title. This weekend they travel to Tacoma for games on Friday and Saturday. The Sockers can clinch the division by winning both games. On the flip side, the Stars (8-4) can take a half game lead by sweeping the Sockers. Of maybe greater consequence, Saturday's game is also the Semifinal game of the US Open. The winner will host the final in March.

Player of the Week Craig Salvati, Cincinnati Kings and Paul Wright, San Diego Sockers For the first time two players will split the Player of the Week award. Salvati is the league's top goalie at 10-1 with a 4.93 GAA. He was credited with 8 saves in Cincinnati's 6-0 win over Ohio. It was the PASL-Pro's third shutout in its three year history, but it was the first 60 minute shutout against a fellow PASL-Pro team.

Wright, the only active player from the original MISL, refuses to act his age. The 41-year old scored four first half goals against Tijuana and added two assists for a six point night, including a natural hat trick.

Kick Starters - Conversations you should be having about the PASL-Pro Howes and Weinberg, the Stars Come Out at Night Greg Howes is arguably the greatest active player in indoor soccer. He's still in his prime and has three league MVPs under his belt. But up until recently, he has kept a pretty low profile. Heading into their big showdown with San Diego, Howes and teammate Ian Weinberg have been playing their best soccer. In fact, Howes has risen to 2nd in the league in points, while Weinberg is 6th. It may all be for naught if the Stars don't put up a good showing against the Sockers this weekend.

Super Whatsit? The US will be preoccupied by the Super Bowl this Sunday, but that doesn't mean a day off for the PASL-Pro's Canadian and Mexican teams. Winnipeg will host Calgary and Tijuana will host Intech.

US Open Update The San Diego Sockers and Tacoma Stars will meet in the US Open Semifinal on Saturday, but first will be the Eastern Quarterfinal between Cincinnati and Illinois on Friday. The winner of that game will face Louisville in the other Semifinal.
