Panthers players instills lesson on finances and life
March 5, 2009 - Premier Basketball League (PBL) News Release
Detroit, Mich - The Detroit Panthers are preparing to provide lifelong lessons off the court by going into the classrooms at Detroit's White Elementary on 5161 Charles Street. Working along with Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan (JA), Panthers players will give instructions on financial literacy, work readiness, and career development, all the components that makes up a JA program, which helps prepare students for adulthood, on Tuesday, March 3 beginning at 8:00 a.m.
Both organizations are excited about this venture. The Panthers Organization has two missions: One is to provide quality basketball to the community. Two, and the most important, is getting involved with the community. "In our neighborhoods, we see a desperate need for children to learn early about finances and career choices. Especially in this global economy which we live," stated Kevin A. Carter, general manager and owner of the Detroit Panthers Organization. "When I found out about JA and the many programs it offers children as young as kindergarteners to learn about personal finances and our global economy, I had to get involved."
Carter is very proactive in the community and is always looking for opportunities to have his organization involved, which works well for many of his players. Charles "Chucky" Bailey, small forward, will switch from passing basketballs to passing out test to check the knowledge of the students. "I'm excited about going into the classroom. I have my degree in early childhood development so I feel right at home," said Bailey. Along with the players, the Panthers' announcer, Randee Henry, who volunteers her time tutoring and mentoring seventh and eighth graders in Detroit, will also take a classroom and be a teacher for a day. After teaching JA, the Panthers' representative will talk to different students about basketball and making the right choices in life.
