Pair of af2 Originals Rekindle Rivalry
April 18, 2002 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Tallahassee Thunder ventures out of Florida for the first time in 2002 as it heads to Charleston Friday for a crucial Southern Division matchup with the Swamp Foxes at North Charleston Coliseum. Both clubs are looking for win No. 2 - Charleston seeks a share of the division lead with idle Florida (2-0).
Both charter members of af2, Tallahassee and Charleston didn't meet last season, but played twice during the league's 2000 inaugural campaign. In their last tilt on June 24, 2000, the Thunder rolled to a 54-24 win.
This game has the makings of a shootout, as both Tallahassee and Charleston feature high-octane offenses. The Thunder owns one of the league's most potent arms in QB CHRIS WINDSOR. The third-year signal-caller out of Southern Miss already has eclipsed 500 yards passing in his first two games. One of Windsor's primary targets has been OS CAINON LAMB. Along with hauling in three touchdowns last week against Macon, the speedy Lamb added a 50-yard kickoff return for another score.
Charleston's RAY ISAAC will take the snaps for the Swamp Foxes, providing his sore ribs cooperate. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Isaac completed 9-of-12 for 108 yards and four touchdowns in one half of action last week. Should Isaac not be able to go, the Swamp Foxes have a competent backup in rookie MIKE BATH. Replacing Isaac in the second half last week, Bath completed seven passes for 107 yards and two scores.
Whoever is under center for the Swamp Foxes surely will be looking to get the ball to DWAYNE WILMOT. Last week in Greensboro, the OS grabbed nine balls for 99 yards and four touchdowns. Combined with his 107 kick return yards, Wilmot racked up 206 all-purpose yards in the game.
Another weapon for the Swamp Foxes comes on the other side of the ball in OL/DL PRESTON VINSON. The ADT Defensive Player of the Week recorded three sacks (two for safeties) against the Prowlers last week.
Tallahassee and Charleston meet one more time this season. The rematch takes place on Friday, May 3 in Tallahassee.
The Carolina Rhinos open their home schedule on Friday as they host the first-place Macon Knights at the BI-LO Center. The Knights clobbered the Rhinos 54-18 in their Week 2 meeting and then went on to a thrilling 48-42 win in Tallahassee last week. Carolina comes off a bye week, so it should be well rested for this divisional rematch. QB MIKE GLUSKI leads the Knights' offensive attack with 445 passing yards and 10 touchdowns on the season. Rhinos' Head Coach ROD MILLER hopes his bunch can improve on the dismal 18-point performance in Week 2 and earn their first win. Maybe the home turf will be the difference for Carolina. The Rhinos have won eight straight games at the BI-LO Center.
For the third straight week, the Rochester Brigade plays at home. And for the third straight week, Rochester plays a divisional opponent. This week, the Mohegan Wolves come calling, and sole possession of second place is on the line. The Brigade looks to rebound from a 42-36 loss to Albany, while Mohegan upended Norfolk 47-29 last week. Brigade OS MARTINO THEUS appears to be the go-to guy on offense this season, as he is the team leader with 15 receptions for 200 yards and five touchdowns. Mohegan QB CABLE DAVIS has tossed six touchdowns on the season, but he also has thrown four interceptions. These two clubs will meet two more times this season.
