Outlaws Use Early Goal to Top Aviators, 3-1

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK - Michael Thomson scored his third goal in two games but the Brooklyn Aviators fell to the New Jersey Outlaws, 3-1, in Federal Hockey League play.

Thomson's wrister off a turnover in front cut the deficit to 2-1 with just over 10 minutes to play in the third period, but the Outlaws goaltender Dan McWhinney held Brooklyn scoreless the rest of the way. He stopped 35 of 36 shots he faced.

Brooklyn had seven power play opportunities but couldn't convert, including a 5-on-3 for the final 1:53 of regulation. A pair of fights, including one between McWhinney and the Aviators goaltender Jo St. Pierre, resulted in the two-man advantage.

The Aviators fell behind 2-0 through two periods on a pair of goals by New Jersey's Kevin Cooper. The forward scored his first goal 10:12 into the opening period and added his second on a breakaway with five seconds remaining in the second.

After Brooklyn cut the deficit in half in the third, New Jersey's Anthony Battaglia scored with just under 3:30 to play in regulation to push the Outlaws' lead back to two goals. His wrist shot just trickled past St. Pierre to extend the lead.

The loss was the Aviators' fourth in a row, and snapped their two-game winning streak against New Jersey. Brooklyn returns to action on Thursday night at 7:35 pm against the Akwesasne Warriors.
