Outlaws Sign Rookie Forward

San Angelo – The Outlaws are currently in a place they have never been before. No it's not at the Bowl-O-Rama with the President's Cup Trophy in Memphis, but third in the league in most players signed to contracts for the upcoming 2002-2003 hockey season. This number was again increased by one today making nine players signed to contracts for next season.

The Outlaws announced the signing of rookie forward Mikhail Salienko today in this spectacular press release. Salienko, a native of Riga, Latvia, will come to the Outlaws with only 2 professional games under his belt. Salienko played for the Latvian National Team from 1993 until 1995, in which he played in various international tournaments. In 1993 the Latvian National Team won 1st place at the Junior World Championship in Spain in the Pool C Division. The following year they moved up to the Pool B Division and placed 2nd at the Championships in Poland. In 1995, Salienko played 6 exhibition games with the Latvian National Team, where he scored 3 goals and 3 assists.

In 1996 Salienko came to the States and began to play Juniors in the United States Hockey League. He was with the Des Moines Buccaneers (USHL) for 33 games where he scored 5 goals and 13 assists before being traded to the Dubuque Fighting Saints, where he played 34 games, netting 12 goals and 29 assists and becoming the 1st Runner-Up in the National Championships.

The following season Salienko decided to go to college and entered into the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (NCHA). Through a four year college term that spanned from 1997 to 2001, Salienko scored 41 goals, assisted on 72 others all in 114 games played. During that term Salienko also received some prestigious awards. In 1999 he was named to the All-NCHA First Team and the All-WIAC First Team. The following year, in 2000, Salienko became the NCHA Champion. After his last season in college, Salienko turned pro and played 2 games for the Elmira Jackals if the United Hockey League (UHL) during the playoffs. During these 2 playoff games he assisted on 2 goals.

"It will be great to have Mikhail on the team," said Outlaws Head Coach Brent Scott. "I have heard many great things about him, not only by his college coach but also the coach of the Jackals."

With the signing of Salienko, the Outlaws currently sit at nine players signed to contracts with more to come in the near future. The Outlaws look to hit the ice October 7th for training cam with the regular season beginning October 17th. The Central Hockey League schedule should be released in the next couple of weeks.
