San Angelo Saints News Release

San Angelo – The San Angelo outlaws of the Central Hockey League announced today they have re-signed four key players for the upcoming 2002-2003 hockey season. Among these four players were goaltender Jamie Ronayne, defenseman Brent Currie, and forwards Jason Abel and Jarett Metz. "I am happy to have these four guys back," said Outlaws Head Coach Brent Scott. "It is easier to build a team around a good core of players and I have started building that core today."

Jamie Ronayne came to the Outlaws early in the season from the New Haven Knights of the United Hockey League (UHL) when Outlaws goaltender Clint Owen went down with injuries. After his 5 game contract with the Outlaws, in which he went 1-0-0, Ronayne was released and acquired by the El Paso Buzzards (CHL). With the Buzzards, Ronayne went 5-3-0 before being released. After his release from the Buzzards Ronayne was reacquired by the Outlaws during mid-season where, for the remainder of the season he went 5-5-2 with an overall goals against average of 3.48 and a save percentage of 0.906. "I look forward to having Jamie back," said Scott. "I firmly believe that he will be my number one and I look for great things to come from him."

The second player to be announced today was the 1998-99 Outlaws' Fan Favorite, Jason Abel. The upcoming 2002-03 season will be Abel's fourth season as an Outlaw. Abel came to the Outlaws in 1998-99 from the Grand Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he was voted an All-Star and also named the teams Most Valuable Player. In his first professional season as an Outlaw, Abel scored 4 goals and assisted on 14 others with 92 penalty minutes in 63 games played in the regular season. The following season Abel went to Tulsa to play for the Oilers of the CHL. In the 29 games played as an Oiler, Abel provided 3 goals and 3 assist with 69 penalty minutes. The following season Abel came back to the Outlaws and in 31 games played netted 4 goals and 7 helpers before going on season ending IR. This past season Abel stepped up his performance and in 64 games played he scored 14 goals and 41 assists. In playing all regular season games, Abel was awarded the Outlaws Iron Man Award.

The third player announced at today's press conference was defenseman Brent Currie. Currie, who will also be playing his fourth season as an Outlaw, is also the longest consecutive player to play for the team playing his last three seasons here in San Angelo. Currie went pro after an impressive season with the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL), where he had 6 goals and assisted on 30 in 57 games played. Currie then played 5 games with the Corpus Christi Ice Rays of the former WPHL and 23 games with the Austin Ice Bats also of the former WPHL before coming to the Outlaws, where in 34 games he netted 3 goals and passed for 5 more. The following off-season he began to work out and it showed dramatic improvements in his performance. In 70 games played that season, he was named the Outlaws Un-Sung Hero and awarded the Outlaws Iron Man Award all while just having 9 points, but an impressive 145 penalty minutes. This last season, Currie only played 40 games, after being suspended by the CHL for an off-ice alteration in Bossier Shreveport. In those 40 games Currie passed for 11 assists and added 124 penalty minutes to his career stats. Currie, who also helped fill in for a play by play announcer towards the end of the season, earned the respect of the fans of San Angelo and was named the 2001-02 Outlaws Fan Favorite. "I respect Brent as a great hockey player," said Scott. "He comes to the table giving it his all with great determination and heart."

The final player announced today was forward Jarett Metz. Metz will begin his third professional season and his third season as an Outlaw this upcoming year. "Jarett has the ability to play in the NHL some day and I am glad to have him back here in San Angelo for one more season," said Scott. "His speed and shot are unmatched against a majority of the teams we played this last season, and I look for him to improve even more as the season progresses." Metz came to the Outlaws, after playing for the Vernon Vipers of the BCJHL, last season. In his professional debut he scored 8 goals and 13 assists. This past season the numbers improved significantly while he put 27 shots in the back of the net and passed for 20 more all in 64 games played, which also entitled him the Outlaws Iron Man Award and the Outlaws Un-Sung Hero Award.

The Outlaws currently have season ticket packages on sale now. Anyone interested can speak with an Outlaws ticket representative by calling 949-PUCK, again that number is 949-7825.
