Billings Outlaws News Release
BILLINGS - Feb. 17, 2010- The time has come for another season of action-packed, hard-hitting Billings Outlaws football following their triumph in last season's United Bowl championship. The 2010 season kicks off with a scrimmage game against the Great Falls Gladiators at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Outlaws SportsPlex indoor arena. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
The Great Falls Gladiators are one of 28 teams in the semi-pro Rocky Mountain Football League which play 11-man, outdoor football. Saturday, the team will participate under the Indoor Football League rules by playing 8-man football on the SportsPlex's 50-yard indoor field.
"It's definitely a short window for them to get ready for the game, but they're excited about the opportunity," said Outlaws coach Heron O'Neal. "They play regular 11-man, outdoor football, so it's going to be a big adjustment for them."
The Gladiators posted a 7-2 record in 2009, earning a spot in the league playoffs where they were defeated 44-23 by the Utah Valley Desperados. For the season, the Gladiators averaged 27.2 points per game and totaled 1,338 yards passing and 695 yards rushing.
Brad Thurber led the team in rushing with 205 yards and 4 touchdowns, while Maurice Jones was the leading receiver with 18 catches for 352 yards and 5 TDs.
In addition to the live scrimmage, O'Neal said he is eager to use the game as a live tryout for the Great Falls players. "I've been told that they have some players who might be able to help us," he said. "I'll definitely take a look at them. We've already signed more Montana players this year than we've ever had before ... if we can sign a few more, that's even better."
The Outlaws began training camp last Sunday. Billings will begin the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 28 with a 4 p.m. home game at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark against the Kent Predators of Kent, Wash.
