Ottawa Fury FC News Release
EDMONTON, AB - Ottawa Fury FC put forth a valiant performance Wednesday night in Edmonton in an effort to erase a 3-1 deficit in the Amway Canadian Championship, but when the final whistle blew Fury FC found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-1 score that will see FC Edmonton advance to the semifinals 6-2 on aggregate. Andrew Wiedeman scored the lone goal for Ottawa, his first with Fury FC. "I thought we came out today and created a lot of chances early," said Assistant Coach Martin Nash, who was behind the bench Wednesday night with Marc Dos Santos serving a one-game suspension following a dismisall at the end of the opening leg in Ottawa last week. "We should have scored two before they scored their second, but that seems to be the story this season for us - producing a number of chances and just not putting them away."
After Fury FC came close just two minutes in, FC Edmonton made the most of their first opportunity in the 8th minute as Tomi Ameobi tapped home the rebound after Romuald Peiser made a good first-shot save on Cristian Raudales. While the goal put Ottawa in a 1-0 hole, it did little to change what was required from Fury FC on the night as they need to score three goals at the very least, regardless of what Edmonton did on the score sheet.
Paulo Junior would come close to pulling Ottawa level, but was unable to bury his opportunity. Minutes later, the first leg difference maker, Lance Laing, picked out Sainey Nyassi with a cross-field pass and Nyassi ripped a high shot past Peiser to give the Eddies a 2-0 lead (5-1 on aggregate).
The Brazilian striker came close again for Ottawa, but first wide at the back post. Peiser would again be relied upon and came up huge for his defence with a pair of saves before Ottawa hit on the counter and Carl Haworth slotted the ball through to Andrew Wiedeman who turn and blasted home his first-ever goal for Fury FC to cut the Edmonton lead in half and inject life into Ottawa's hopes of a comeback. Romuald Peiser, who made several crucial saves for Fury FC on the night, made another big save on Sainey Nyassi moments after Wiedeman's marker. Just before halftime, Wiedeman was sprung on a breakaway, but was brought down from behind inside the penalty area by FC Edmonton captain Albert Watson, but no call was made and Ottawa would go into the dressing room trailing 2-1.
"It looked to me like a clear penalty," said Nash following the match. "It doesn't help when you don't get those calls, but surrending the number of ls we have in the past two games doesn't help either."
Ubiparipovic, Paterson, Richter and Paulo Junior would all have second half chances, but all were unsuccessful in beating Matt VanOekel in the Edmonton goal. In the 81st minute Edmonton was award a penalty kick after a foul from Brandon Poltronieri. Darly Fordyce scored his second of the Canadian Championship to give FC Edmonton a 3-1 and snuff out any lingering hope Fury FC had of a comeback.
FC Edmonton would capture a 3-1 victory, advancing to the semifinals 6-2 on aggregate. The Eddies will face the Vancouver Whitecaps in a home and home series beginning May 6 in Edmonton with the return leg set for May 13 in Vancouver.
Ottawa will head to Brooklyn to face the league-leading New York Cosmos on May 2. Fury FC returns to TD Place on May 9 when the Tampa Bay Rowdies come to town. Tickets available at OttawaFuryFC.com.
