Ottawa Senators Invite 22 Players to Rookie Tournament

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 8, 2010) - The Ottawa Senators pre-season, sponsored by Canadian Tire local dealers, begins this week with today's announcement of the 22 players invited to take part in a four-team round-robin tournament from Sept. 11 to Sept. 14 at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ont. Joining the Senators prospects are squads from the Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins and host Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Senators rookies will be led by newly appointed Binghamton Senators head coach Kurt Kleinendorst and assistant Steve Stirling. Ottawa's hockey staff will also be in London for the tournament.

The squad is made up of two goaltenders, six defencemen and 14 forwards (complete roster below). Twelve players were drafted by the Senators, four were signed as free agents, one player was acquired via trade while five other players are participating under amateur tryout agreements.

Eight of the invited players saw minor-pro action last season. Forwards Bobby Butler and Kaspars Daugavins, and defenceman Jared Cowen played their first NHL games with the Senators during the 2009-10 campaign. Cowen (2009), along with Jim O'Brien (2007), are former first-round picks.

The Senators rookies begin this year's camp with an open practice at the Bell Sensplex on Friday, Sept. 10, at 8:30 a.m before leaving for the tournament.

The Ottawa Senators 2010-11 rookie tournament roster is as follows:

2010 rookie tournament schedule at London's John Labatt Centre

Saturday, Sept. 11: Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa at 2 p.m.; Chicago vs. Toronto at 7 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 12: Ottawa vs. Chicago at 2 p.m.; Toronto vs. Pittsburgh at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 14: Chicago vs. Pittsburgh at 2 p.m.; Toronto vs. Ottawa at 7 p.m.

The Senators have participated in 10 rookie tournaments since their first appearance in 1999. Last September in Kitchener, Ont., Ottawa finished the round-robin tied for first with the Boston Bruins, with two wins and one loss in three games.

Since the first tournament in 1999, past rookie team rosters have included the following members who have played for the Senators: Cody Bass (2005 and 2007), Kaspars Daugavins (2007, 2008, 2009), Brian Elliott (2007), Mike Fisher (1999 and 2001), Nick Foligno (2007), Erik Karlsson (2009), Chris Kelly (1999, 2000 and 2001), Brian Lee (2007), Chris Neil (1999), Peter Regin (2008, 2009), Jason Spezza (2001 and 2002) and Zack Smith (2008, 2009).
