Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Anaheim Ducks have announced the club's 2010 rookie roster for the five-team round-robin tournament scheduled September 12-16 in Penticton, British Columbia.
Featured players on Anaheim's rookie roster include five first-round draft selections and the club's first three picks from the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. From the 2010 draft, defenseman Cam Fowler (first round, 12th overall), right wing Emerson Etem (first round, 29th overall) and right wing Devante Smith-Pelly (second round, 42nd overall) will make their first appearances at an Anaheim rookie tournament. They will be joined by three previous first-round selections, including center Peter Holland (15th overall in 2009), center Kyle Palmieri (26th overall in 2009) and defenseman Mark Mitera (19th overall in 2006). In addition, center Nick Bonino, who made his NHL debut with the Ducks last season, will be among 15 forwards on the 25-man roster.
Fowler helped the Windsor Spitfires to their second consecutive Ontario Hockey League (OHL) championship and second straight Memorial Cup in 2009-10. As a member of Team USA, Fowler won gold at both the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship and 2009 IIHF U-18 World Championship, where he was named the tournament's top defenseman. Etem led all Western Hockey League (WHL) rookies in goals and finished fourth overall in points last season with Medicine Hat. The highest drafted Southern California born-and-trained player in Anaheim Ducks history, Etem was named Medicine Hat's Rookie of the Year following the 2009-10 season. Smith-Pelly tied for Mississauga St. Michael's Majors (OHL) team lead in scoring while ranking second in goals and power play goals in 2009-10. Smith-Pelly also paced the Majors in goals and tied for first in scoring during the 2010 OHL Playoffs.
Holland spent his third OHL season with Guelph in 2009-10, finishing tied for 15th in league scoring. Holland was selected to play in the 2009 OHL All-Star Classic and participated in the 2009 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Top Prospects Game. He also represented Team Canada at the 2009 Under-18 World Championship in Fargo, ND. Palmieri tied for the Notre Dame team lead in rookie scoring and tied for 10th in CCHA rookie scoring. With Fowler, Palmieri won a gold medal as a member of Team USA at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship. Mitera split his second professional season with San Antonio and Abbotsford of the American Hockey League (AHL) and Bakersfield (ECHL) last year. In 2007-08, Mitera was named the Inside College Hockey Defenseman of the Year and a CCHA finalist for Best Defensive Defenseman. Bonino made his NHL debut with the Ducks in 2009-10, scoring 1-1=2 points in nine games.
The eight-game round-robin tournament will feature the Ducks, host Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers. Anaheim prospects will play three games at the South Okanagan Events Centre, including September 12 vs. San Jose (7:30 p.m. PDT), September 13 vs. Calgary (4 p.m. PDT) and September 15 vs. Vancouver (4 p.m. PDT).
