April 17, 2002 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA â Wednesday, April 17, 2002 â The Ottawa Renegades are pleased to announce that they have agreed to terms with two quarterbacks, as free agents Chuck Clements and Oteman Sampson have signed with the club.
Clements, 28, a former sixth-round draft pick of the National Football League's New York Jets who spent the 2001 campaign with the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL, is entering his first season in the CFL, and sixth since turning pro. The strong-armed quarterback is a two-time All-Star with the University of Houston who completed 223 of 354 pass attempts (63%) for 2,417 yards and 21 TDs in his senior season. He ranks third all-time on the Cougars with 7,112 passing yards, behind David Klingler and Andre Ware, and is second in school history with 683 completions. The 6'3", 214-pounder has also played for the Jets as well as the Berlin Thunder of NFL-Europe.
Sampson is joining his third CFL franchise since graduating from Florida A&M, where he was named an NCAA Division I-AA All-American with the Rattlers. The 6'1", 195-pounder first joined the Calgary Stampeders as a free agent in 1999, backing up quarterback Jeff Garcia and Dave Dickinson, before joining the Toronto Argonauts at the beginning of the 2000 campaign. Sampson, who will turn 25 on April 25th, also has XFL experience as he spent the 2001 season with the San Francisco Demons, playing under offensive coordinator and current Renegades head coach, Joe Paopao.
"I am extremely pleased with these additions," explained Paopao. "These are two solid quarterbacks who, along with Dan Crowley (signed as a free agent February 26), makes the position wide open within the organization. These are guys that racked up large numbers in college, and we are extremely fortunate to have them aboard."
Professional football returns to the nation's capital this spring as the Ottawa Renegades open up their inaugural training camp in late May. The regular season kicks off on June 28 against the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders at Frank Clair Stadium.
