Mississauga Power News Release

(OSHAWA, ON) On Friday, January 4th, Durham's team donated two large truck loads of non-perishable goods to the Oshawa Salvation Army Community & Family Services, the donation also included over 100 gently used winter coats.

The Oshawa Power held its "Fan Appreciation Night" on January 3, 2013, where fans were admitted into the building for free to watch the Power face off against the London Lightning and were asked to bring a donation as support.

Nancy who was attending her very first Oshawa Power game with her two young sons said, "This is such a great idea and I'm so glad that the Power are using their influence to encourage fans to help the community in this way."

Oshawa Salvation Army Community & Family Services offers a variety of community services such as counseling services and an emergency assistance food bank which aids those less fortunate by providing people with a short- term supply of food when they have nowhere else to turn.

They also provide services and support to those who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Over the past few years, over 1,900 families and 6,000 individuals have been assisted.

"When Mr. Downey expressed the Salvation Army's grave need for food supplies and winter coats after the Christmas Holidays, the Power organization really wanted to put forth an effort to help them and the community they serve", said VP of Basketball Operations, John Wiggins. "It was truly amazing to see the people of Durham Region come out and support such a worthy cause. The Oshawa Power are committed to continuing our involvement with the Salvation Army and all other community based programs."

Ivan Downey, Director of the Oshawa Salvation Army Community & Family Services said, "This is the single biggest donation we've ever received from any one event and the items collected will go a long way to helping individuals, families and children" He added, "The response from the community has been tremendous and the warm coats will come in handy, we're appreciative to the Oshawa Power for their support."
