Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals Baseball Club is proud to announce former World Series champion hitting co-ordinator and Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame inductee Orv Franchuk as the team's new Field Manager.
The Caps officially unveiled Franchuk as the team's new bench boss at a media conference on Monday afternoon at TELUS Field. Effectively immediately, Franchuk will assume Field Manager duties from interim Field Manager Gord Gerlach, who maintains his role as Caps Director of Baseball Operations.
"I look forward to working side-by-side with Orv Franchuk as our new Field Manager," Gerlach said. "Orv is held in high regard throughout professional baseball, and the Capitals are fortunate to acquire a man with his lengthy background, expertise and record of success in the game. Orv has made great contributions to the growth of baseball and to our community. Together, our objective is to build and maintain a perennial winner for the organization and the city."
"I am extremely excited for the opportunity to be joining the Edmonton Capitals," Franchuk said. "I could not have asked for a better situation. The Capitals are a quality organization with a solid vision and outstanding staff. I am honoured to be a part of it and to come back to where my passion for the game began."
Franchuk, who was born in Amesbury, Alberta, has an extensive coaching background that includes winning the World Series in 2004 as the hitting co-ordinator of the Boston Red Sox. He has also coached at the Major League level with the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics, has coached Team Canada on four separate occasions, and was most recently the hitting coach for the San Diego Padres AA and AAA teams in 2009 and 2010.
Franchuk is a former player and manager for the Edmonton Tigers of the Alberta Major Baseball League, and later coached the Edmonton Trappers to two Pacific Coast League titles between 1995 and 1997. He was inducted into the Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame in June 2008.
Franchuk now resides in Boise, Idaho. In addition to his baseball accolades, Franchuk obtained his Masters Degree in Education from Long Beach State and had a 24-year career with Edmonton Public Schools.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats for the 2011 campaign, presented by Canadian Tire, are now available, and individual game tickets will be available next season for just $10 every game.
