DIVISION LEADERS MEET IN KEY GAME
The math is now simple. Any combination of one Orlando Titans victory or one Rochester loss, and the Titans will insure their inclusion in the 2010 NLL Playoffs. But the Titans have their sites set a lot higher, with goals of winning the East Division and possibly challenging for the overall number one seeding in the post-season. And for that reason alone, this week's home game with the Washington Stealth (9-4) has huge ramifications as the two division leaders prepare to do battle at Amway Arena at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday night. For Orlando, it is almost a "must win" game if they expect to challenge the Stealth and defending champion Edmonton Rush (9-4) for the top overall seed in the playoffs. Orlando's closest challenger in the East, the Toronto Rock (8-6) also remains within striking distance for the East crown, which is another reason why the Titans would like to notch a third straight win.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: TITANS TAKE DOWN BOSTON
After losing two regular season games to the Boston Blazers earlier this season, the Titans got a little revenge last week - winning a 13-10 decision over the Blazers. The win was impressive for two reasons. First, it came on the road against a team had done a great job of defending its home turf all season. Secondly, it reaffirmed that the Titans have some depth as the victory came with a lineup that was missing star forward Jordan Hall (hamstring), transition Jarett Park (hand) and defenseman Stephen Peyser. "We were missing three key veterans and once again our younger guys responded," head coach Ed Comeau said. The Titans jumped out on top early, getting two goals each from Casey Powell and Mike McLellan, along with a single goal from Jesse Guerin. But the Blazers, behind five Dan Dawson goals, came back and tied the game by halftime. The game remained tied through three quarters, but after allowing a go-ahead goal in the first 30 seconds of the 4th quarter, Matt Vinc shut the door the rest of the way and Orlando received goals from Pat Maddadelena, Mat MacLeod and Powell as the Titans won for the third time in four games.
HOME TEAMS FIND SLEDDING ROUGH IN NLL
Perhaps it can be explained by parity, but home field advantage isn't always so much of an advantage in the National Lacrosse League. Through 71 games this season, the home team is 38-33 (.535 winning percentage), but since Feb. 19, NLL home teams have won just 13 of 35 games (.371 winning percentage). What home teams have defended their turf best in 2010? Washington 6-1, Edmonton 5-1, and Orlando 4-2 are all playing .667 or better at home. Which team has the most trouble at home? Colorado is winless (0-6) with two regular season home games to go.
