Edmonton, AB. - The Energy are coming back to Edmonton with a 2-0 record after a weekend sweep of the Orlando Venom. For the Venom, it was their first look at International Basketball Leagueaction after just joining the league for the 2012 season.
The Energy's opening game of the season was Friday night and they came out of it with a 15-point victory. Orlando kept the game close for the first three quarters, but the Energy pulled away in the fourth for the 112-97 win.
On Saturday night the Venom came out strong and were looking to split the weekend series early. With the Energy trailing 58-51 at the half they outscored the Venom 35-21 in the third quarter to lead by 7 going into the final frame. With 17.4 seconds remaining in the game the Energy found themselves down 107-104. Those last 17.4 seconds saw the Energy outscore their opponent 6-1 including a Curtis Nash steal with 3 seconds left and a lay in at the buzzer for a 110-108 victory.
Steve Sir, back with the Energy after a season away from the team, was high scorer for the Energy with 20 points and 5 assists. Troy Gottselig was also a huge factor in the victory, contributing 18 points and 12 rebounds. Nash's last second basket was 2 of his 15 point, 10 rebound, 5 assist performance.
The Energy are now back in town for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday practices at the Saville from 4:00-6:00pm.
Home opener weekend starts Friday, May 4, 2012 at the Saville against the Jersey G-Force. Tip-off is at 7:30pm.
