Original IceCap King Joins Utica Coaching Staff
August 2, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - As announced earlier today by the Vancouver Canucks, Jason King, St. John's IceCaps Director of Hockey Operations, has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Canucks' American Hockey League affiliate, the Utica Comets.
An original IceCap player and native Newfoundland and Labradorian, King led the club in goals (22) during the club's inaugural campaign (2011-12) before a concussion ended his career the following season. Previous to joining the IceCaps, King played nine seasons of professional hockey, including 55 NHL games with the Canucks and four with the Anaheim Ducks.
King joined the IceCaps coaching staff, as an assistant, after officially retiring in the summer of 2013 and became the club's Director of Hockey Operations last season.
Danny Williams, CEO of the IceCaps, says King's departure leaves the organization with bittersweet feelings.
"First and foremost, the IceCaps are thrilled to see Jason fulfil his dream of returning to the professional coaching ranks," said Mr. Williams. "There are not many of these positions available and it is a testament to Jason's abilities and reputation that he has secured such a post.
"However, on a personal level, we are saddened to see him go. Jason is a special member of the IceCaps family, having served the club with excellence and the utmost professionalism in three different capacities since the IceCaps joined the AHL in 2011. We wish Jason and his family all the best in the future."
Like Mr. Williams, King admits to having mixed feelings about the move.
"It was a tough decision but an opportunity myself and my family felt I had to pursue," said King. "I want to thank Mr. Williams and Mr. (Glenn) Stanford for giving me the opportunity to work in professional hockey in my home province and I'd like to thank all my former IceCaps teammates and coaches as well as the IceCaps office staff for making the past five years so enjoyable. The IceCaps organization will always hold a special place in my heart."
IceCaps season tickets are now on sale. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Mile One Centre box office (noon-5 p.m.), by phone at 709-576-7657 (noon-5:30 p.m.), or online at www.mileonecentre.com.
