Orientation Camp Recap
April 27, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sarnia Sting News Release
The Sarnia Sting welcomed 33 players and their families to the RBC Centre this past weekend for the 2015 Orientation Camp. The two-day camp was highlighted by fitness testing on Saturday morning, followed by a Black vs. White scrimmage on Saturday afternoon, and a second scrimmage on Sunday morning. Many of the Sting faithful were in attendance this weekend, looking to catch a glimpse of some of the Club's top prospects from both the 2014 and 2015 OHL Priority Selections.
Following the scrimmage on Saturday afternoon, the team held a Draft Pick reception where players from the 2015 Draft Class were presented with their draft jersey and draft cap in front of friends and family. Prior to the reception, Sting regulars, Alex Black (Secondary) and Kevin Spinozzi (Post-Secondary) were awarded with 2014-15 Scholastic Player of the year honours.
Team White, led by Sting first rounder, Sasha Chmelevski, were victorious in the first scrimmage; taking the opening game by a score of 6-2. The aforementioned Chmelevski scored once and added two helpers for Team White in the win. Second round pick, Ryan McGregor showed flashes of promise for Team Black in the loss, picking up helpers on both of his team's goals in the opening scrimmage.
On Day 2 of camp, Team Black returned the favour, winning 4-2 in the second scrimmage. Ninth round pick, Holden Hrysko scored the game-winner for Team Black in the win. The former Burlington Eagle found the back of the net in both scrimmages and was arguably one of the best players on the ice this weekend.
Other standouts to note include Sarnia native, Kaden Fulcher who allowed only one goal in 3 periods for Team Black, and 2014 draft pick, Brandan Morgan who scored twice for Team White on Saturday afternoon.
Returning skaters Chase Campbell, Jake O'Donnell and Sarnia native, Franco Sproviero all seemed to have taken big strides after spending the 2014-15 season with their Junior B clubs and had impressionable weekends in front of the Sting staff.
With Orientation Camp in the books, 2015 Draft picks, Ryan McGregor and Aidan Hughes will be participating in the OHL Gold Cup in Kitchener, beginning May 7th. McGregor will suit up for Team OMHA (Black) while goaltender Aidan Hughes will represent Alliance.
The Sarnia Sting Hockey Club would like to thank all of the fans who showed up to take in the scrimmages, as well as the players and families who attended the festivities this past weekend.
