Orange County SC Clinches Playoff Berth with 1-0 Win against San Diego

October 21, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Orange County SC News Release

Orange County SC clinched a berth in the 2021 USL Championship Playoffs with a 1-0 win over their southern rivals San Diego Loyal SC on Wednesday, October 20 at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine. It was OCSC's third consecutive victory and clean sheet putting them within a point of second place in the Pacific Division.

After missing the playoffs in 2020, OCSC endured a 2021 USL Championship regular season that saw a midseason coaching change, depleted rosters and a grueling schedule often playing three games in seven days. On the night where OCSC needed just one point to clinch, the team fended off the Loyal behind a spectacular free-kick goal and a defensive clinic.

In the 25', forward Ronaldo Damus was brought down at the top of the penalty box drawing a free-kick. Both forward Brian Iloski and midfielder Eric Calvillo stood over the ball awaiting the referee's signal. The whistle blew and Calvillo struck a right-footed curling shot past the outstretched San Diego goalkeeper Austin Guerrero for the game's only goal. This was Calvillo's third goal of the season.

San Diego was left stunned at the impressive goal they had given up and looked to find the equalizer. OCSC goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky and his line of defense kept San Diego from scoring a goal. Rakovsky, who was named as an honorable mention in last week's USL Championship Team of the Week, earned his third consecutive shutout.

With the win, OCSC moves a point behind San Diego who currently sit in second place with both teams having two games left to play. OCSC now holds the tiebreaker over San Diego in head-to-head going 2-1-1 this season. A second place finish guarantees a home playoff match with tickets now on sale at orangecountysoccer.com/playoffs.

OCSC wraps up their home schedule on Saturday, October 23, against Las Vegas Lights FC on Scotoberfest, an OCSC and Scottish festival. The festival begins at 11am around the stadium and the match kicks off at 7pm at Championship Soccer Stadium.
