Inter Miami CF News Release
A year ago, on this date, Nov. 6, 2018, Miami voters endorsed the plan to establish Miami Freedom Park at the site of the Melreese Country Club. In a referendum, a 60% majority voted to allow the Miami Freedom Park ownership group to negotiate a lease with the City of Miami that would bring a public park and home stadium for Inter Miami CF at the location in question.
The vote marked a major milestone for Inter Miami, formally known as el Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, in its efforts to bring world-class soccer to the City of Miami and South Florida as a whole. It helped clear the way for the City to work out details for the development of a 58-acre public park and green space, a tech hub, restaurants and shops, soccer fields for the community, and a 26,000-capacity soccer stadium for Inter Miami at zero cost to City taxpayers.
Members of the ownership group, including Jorge Mas and David Beckham, celebrated the vote surrounded by Inter Miami supporters, who showed their excitement for the future of the project.
Today, a year removed from that celebration, the group remains committed to delivering the Miami Freedom Project the citizens of Miami voted for.
On Tuesday, Nov. 12, Miami Freedom Park will be discussed at a special Commission Meeting at City Hall starting at 9 a.m. The meeting was rescheduled from the original Oct. 24 date due to an unfortunate accident that took place at the previous meeting.
Inter Miami will make its debut in March 2020 playing its first two seasons at its new Fort Lauderdale Stadium with the goal of transitioning to Miami by 2022.
Supporters can do their part by urging city commissioners to respect their vote and see through the finalization of a lease for Miami Freedom Park.
