Tulsa Drillers News Release

May 1, 2008 - For the second straight game Thursday night, the Tulsa Drillers were limited to only one run. But unlike Wednesday's shutout victory, the lone run Thursday could not produce a win as the Arkansas Travelers were able to make two first-inning runs hold up for a 2-1 victory at Dickey Stephens Park.

Tulsa starting pitcher Brandon Hynick was again left searching for his second victory of the season despite another solid outing. He issued only the two early runs in six innings of work. He allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out six. It was the third straight start that he has surrendered only two runs, and he has gone at least six innings in each of the games, but has not gotten the win in any of them.

In the bottom of the first, Hynick allowed three singles and he hit a batter, as Ben Johnson and Corey Smith each had run-scoring hits to put the Travs in front 2-0.

Tulsa's lone run came in the top of the third inning off Travs starter Fernando Rodriguez and it scored without the benefit of a hit. After being hit by a pitch, Corey Wimberly stole both second and third bases. He then scored on a ground ball off the bat of Matt Miller.

From there, Rodriguez would face the minimum number of hitters over the next three innings, before turning the game over to reliever Jeff Kennard.

Kennard allowed only a seventh inning single to Daniel Carte in two innings of work before the Drillers had a chance to rally in the top of the ninth off Kevin Jepsen.

Miller walked to start the final inning, and Tony Blanco followed with a base hit that put runners at first and second with no outs. Jeff Kindel failed on a sacrifice bunt attempt, as Miller was out at third base. Kepsen then struck out Jeff Dragicevich and Carte to end the game.

The win was the first of the year for Rodriguez who improved to 1-3. Jepsen picked up his fourth save of the season, while Hynick fell to 1-2 with the loss.

No Tulsa player had more than one hit in the game.

Outfielder Justin Nelson left the game in the sixth inning with a wrist injury. His status after the game was unknown.

The Drillers will conclude their four-game series in North Little Rock at 7:10PM Friday night. Ching-Lung Lo (0-5, 10.42 ERA) will pitch for Tulsa against Brok Butcher (2-0, 3.14 ERA) of Arkansas.
