Omar Daley selected to USL All-Star Team

Charleston, SC. Charleston Battery midfielder Omar Daley has been selected to the USL First Division All-Star Team for the July 19 match in Cary, North Carolina versus English Coca Cola Championship League side Sheffield Wednesday. The game will be carried live on Fox Soccer Channel at 8:00 pm ET. Daley is the only current Charleston Battery player on the team; former Battery forward Greg Simmonds and midfielder John Ball were also picked.

The team will be coached by Rochester's Laurie Calloway and Montreal's Nick DeSantis; the side includes former World Cup winners Romario and Zinho. The 18-player squad for the USL First Division All-Star Game, which will feature kits provided by Official USL sponsor UMBRO, was selected by United Soccer Leagues in consultation with DeSantis and Calloway.

Daley is in his first season with the Charleston Battery. The Jamaican international has played in 13 games recording 1 goal and 1 assist. Daley joined the Battery from Jamaican Premier League outfit Portmore United, he has 22 caps for the Jamaican National team.

Battery heads north

The Charleston Battery heads to Rochester, NY Saturday for an 7:35 PM match versus the powerhouse Rochester Raging Rhinos. The Battery has never beaten Rochester in an away league fixture; in 2005 the Rhinos defeated the Battery 1-0 in Rochester and 2-1 in the return game played at Blackbaud Stadium.

The Charleston Battery plays two games this weekend, on Sunday Charleston takes on the Toronto Lynx in Toronto; kick off is set for 6:00 PM. Both games can be heard live in the Charleston area on CNN 1450 Am and are also available via webcast at www.charlestonbattery.com.

US Open Cup Third Round

The Charleston Battery will face the Portland Timbers in the Third Round of the 2006 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, Wednesday, July 12 at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. The Battery advanced to host Portland after defeating the Sonoma County Sol 1-0 on June 28. If the Battery defeats Portland it will host Major League Soccer's FC Dallas in a fourth round match at Blackbaud Stadium, Wednesday, August 2.

At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team which advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.

The Charleston Battery has seen considerable success in the US Open Cup in the past. The Battery has twice reached the semi-final stage of the competition (1999 & 2004); in 2005 Charleston was knocked out of the competition by the Des Moines Menace (PDL).
