Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA (February 2, 2011) - The Philadelphia Soul caught up Olympic great Carl Lewis during Saturday's open tryouts to discuss why he is a fan of Arena Football, the Soul, and the city of Philadelphia. Lewis recently signed up as a season ticket holder for the 2011 season.
Lewis is a former track and field athlete who has won 10 Olympic medals (nine gold and one silver) in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 4x100 meter relay, and long jump. He is a three-time Track and Field News 'Athlete of the Year' (1982-84) and was named 'Olympian of the Century' by Sport Illustrated during his 17 year career (1979-96).
Q: Why are you a fan of the Philadelphia Soul
CL: I love football and I think it's great because the NFL is a huge league, but to me this is more about the city. You have people that have an opportunity in the city to really be on the team. It is football for the city of Philadelphia.
Q: How long would you say you have been a Soul fan
CL: I've been a fan for years. I missed it for a while, but I love the league because every single person out here has a dream to be in the NFL and some of them will fulfill that dream, some may not, but they are going to have a great career. Philly has had a lot of success so it has been a lot of fun to watch.
Q: Why did you decide to become a season ticket holder for the Soul
CL: I'm a season ticket holder because I want to see the games. I've been coming out to some of these pre-trials and I want to see how the players develop and watch what happens to them, get to know them, talk to them, and see them. I think it's going to be a fun season, I think they're going to have a lot of success. I'm a big fan of Ron [Jaworski] and I think it's tremendous that he is involved in this program with Pete [Ciarrocchi] and I am looking forward to the season.
Q: If you were in the AFL which position would you have played
CL: Probably receiver because of the speed, height, and the size. I could get that corner catch because I have the size, and a little bit of hands.
Q: Which aspect of the AFL do you think affects players the most
CL: What I like about it is the fast pace and the size of the field, it makes size and the lanes so much more important. For a smaller quarterback it is tougher to see because the field is so much shorter. The players have to make such quick decisions, I like that part. When you're on the NFL field, you run your routes, but here you have to think so much quicker because everything is so much smaller that you know these guys are reacting much more than thinking.
