Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saginaw, Mich. - The second-seeded Saginaw Spirit hosted the third-seeded Soo Greyhounds at the Dow Event Center for Game 1 of their second-round series. Calem Mangone, Alex Christopoulos, and Matyas Sapovaliv all scored their first playoff goals enroute to a 4-0 win. Charlie Schenkel started in net for the Greyhounds saving 32 of 35 shots. At the other end, Andrew Oke stopped all 39 Greyhound shots for his first career playoff shutout.
An even first period saw no score in Game 1. With 14 seconds left, the Greyhounds received a too many men penalty which was served by Travis Hayes and carried over into the second period.
AFTER 1: SAG 0 - 0 SOO (Total Shots: 14 - 14)
At 4:40 of the second period, Hunter Haight scored the first goal of the night, giving Saginaw a 1-0 lead. After collecting a pass from Joey Willis, Haight fired the puck through Schenkel's arm from the right circle. Rodwin Dionicio picked up the secondary assist on Haight's 3rd of the playoffs.
With six minutes left in the second period, Saginaw extended their lead to 2-0. After receiving a pass from Lincoln Moore, Michael Misa and Calem Mangone took off up ice with only one man to beat. Mangone eventually fired the puck from the right circle, sending it right over Schenkel's shoulder.
AFTER 2: SAG 2 - 0 SOO (2nd Period Shots: 13 - 12 Total Shots: 27 - 26)
Just a minute into the third, Alex Christopoulos scored his first of the postseason. After receiving a pass from Owen Beck, Jorian Donovan passed up to Christopoulos who then took off up ice. The overage forward snapped a shot through Schenkel's arm, just like Haight in the second period, to extend the lead to 3-0.
With five minutes left in the game, the Soo pulled Schenkel, leaving an empty net. Matyas Sapovaliv took advantage, firing all the way from the blueline for the unassisted tally.
