Oklahoma City Comets News Release
The Oklahoma City Dodgers used a pair of three-run innings and pitched out of several jams throughout the game, leading the way to a 6-3 win over the El Paso Chihuahuas Tuesday at Southwest University Park. El Paso (40-33) took a 2-0 lead on a Brett Sullivan triple in the second inning, but the Chihuahuas stranded the bases loaded the next inning with a chance to extend the lead. The Dodgers (46-27) scored three runs with two outs in the fifth inning, including a RBI single by Drew Avans and two-run double by Miguel Vargas. The Chihuahuas loaded the bases with none out in bottom of the inning before OKC reliever Marshall Kasowski came into the game and notched a strikeout and a ground ball double play to keep the lead intact. Still trailing by one run, El Paso put runners at second and third with none out in the seventh inning, but OKC relievers Dellin Betances and Daniel Zamora kept the Chihuahuas off the board. In the top of the eighth inning, Michael Busch and Jason Martin hit back-to-back homers, totaling three runs and stretching the lead to 6-2. Luis Campusano led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run before Garrett Cleavinger retired the next three batters to end the game.
Of Note: -The Dodgers have won nine of their last 12 games, 11 of their last 15 games and 15 of their last 20 games. They are also 11-4 in their last 15 road games. At 46-27 overall this season, OKC is now a season-high 19 games above .500. With a win over the second-place Chihuahuas, the Dodgers lead the PCL's East Division by a season-best 6.0 games.
-Miguel Vargas went 2-for-4 with a two-run double, and for the second straight game, he put the Dodgers in the lead for good with a go-ahead hit in the fifth inning. Vargas has now hit safely in 10 consecutive games, going 15-for-39 (.385) with nine RBI, six walks and seven runs scored. It's the second time he's recorded a 10-game hitting streak this season, with the first instance May 28-June 9.
-Michael Busch hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning over the Big Dog House in right field that traveled an estimated 449 feet. -The bullpen covered the final 5.0 innings Tuesday, allowing just one run and three hits, keeping El Paso 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Marshall Kasowski earned his first win of year with 2.0 scoreless innings. He inherited the bases loaded with none out in the fifth inning and struck out Brent Rooker and then got Taylor Kohlwey to ground into an inning-ending double play.
