Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings kicked off their weekend with the loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night at Rogers Place.
In the first period, the Oil Kings looked to take the lead five minutes into the game on a goal from Rilen Kovacevic but the Tigers successfully challenged the play for offside and had the goal stricken from the scoreboard.
The Tigers would then score three goals in a span of 3:13 with Brendan Lee, Hunter St. Martin and Dallon Melin all finding the back of the net before the midway point of the first period to give the visitor's an early three-goal cushion.
Late in the period, the Tigers would run into penalty trouble and the Oil Kings would make them pay as at the 15:16 mark, Ethan MacKenzie notched his first career WHL goal on a power play after he took a pass in the slot from Gavin Hodnett and ripped the puck past the blocker of Evan May to cut Edmonton's deficit to 3-1 at the first intermission.
In the second period, the Oil Kings outshot the Tigers 9-8 and with just under six minutes left in the middle stanza, they were able to pull to within a goal.
After the Tigers turned the puck over in the neutral zone, Hodnett hit Cole Miller, in stride, with a pass in the right circle where he would laser a shot just inside the short-side post to make it a 3-2 game heading into the second intermission. The goal was Miller's ninth of the season.
In the third period, the Tigers would pull away scoring four times with three of the goals provided by Dru Krebs and a single from Cayden Lindstrom to make the final 7-2 in their favour.
Kolby Hay finished the night making 22 saves for the Oil Kings, while May made 20 for the Tigers. Edmonton went 1-for-7 on the power play, Medicine Hat was 1-for-5.
