NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX - Another emotional game, another close contest, but unfortunately another loss. The Jackalopes (8-22-2-2) fell 2-1 to the Lone Star Brahmas (23-11-1-0) at the NYTEX Sports Center on Saturday.
It was a scoreless game through two periods as both teams traded chances to score. The Jackalopes hit a post and had a DJ Hart one-timer denied while the Brahmas were stoned by Noah Rupprecht in tight on the power play.
It took until the third period for either side to score. It was the Brahmas who capitalized on a defensive miscue to get a break-away in tight in the early stages of the third period. The Jackalopes embarked on a power play to attempt to tie the game. The Jackalopes had some good chances to score, including another one-timer attempt as the power play expired, but were unable to break through.
The Brahmas broke through on thier third power play of the game to take a 2-0 lead. The Jackalopes came back however and got on the board with 10 seconds to play off a nice one-timer shot from Tyler German at the base of the far-left circle. It was after the goal however that things got interesting. Joey Mussa was tackled from behind after the goal was scored and that jump led to a near line brawl on the ice between the Jacks and the Brahmas.
Sticks, gloves, and helmets littered the ice in the Lone Star zone after the fight. The engagement lit a fire under the Jackalopes that had been brewing for most of the night. At the end however, it was too little too late as the Jackalopes fell 2-1 to Lone Star for the second straight night.
Despite the loss, the Jackalopes showed some positive signs, most of the third period was on favor of the Jackalopes, it was just a few miscues that ended up being the difference. There were plenty of good scoring chances that were only denied by a hot Brahma goaltender, and the fight that the Jackalopes showed at the end of the game was encouraging and will hopefully pay dividends when the Brahmas visit the Jackalopes in Odessa for a Thursday, Friday, Saturday series next week at the Ector County Coliseum.
