Rockford Thunder News Release

ROCKFORD - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league commissioner Cheri Kempf announced today the schedule for the 2009 regular season.

The six teams in the league will play a 50-game regular season schedule, with all teams playing each other a minimum of 10 games (five home and five away). Unlike the 2008 season, Olympic teams and foreign national teams will not be a part of the competitive schedule.

The Thunder will begin play at the newly renovated Thunder Park at Roscoe on Wednesday, June 3, when the Akron Racers pay visit. This will be the first time since the team moved to Illinois that will not open with the Comcast Chicago Bandits.

After traveling to Akron the following week, the Thunder will return home to take on the Washington Glory, who is planning on bringing Olympic Silver Medalist Monica Abbott to town. The series with the Glory also marks somewhat of a homecoming for new Glory catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest, who played the 2007 season in Rockford.

Rockford will travel to New England from June 24-28 and will have June 29-July 3 off from NPF competition before returning back home for 15 consecutive games. The long home stand will begin with the 2008 NPF Champion Chicago Bandits with an afternoon game on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 and possibly the return of superstar Jennie Finch. The Philadelphia Force and New England Riptide will visit Thunder Park from July 15-19 and July 22-26, respectively.

In addition to the regular home schedule, the Thunder is also looking to host exhibition games, tournaments, a celebrity slow-pitch game and possibly a concert and exhibition with the King and his Court.

The regular season standings will crown a regular-season champion. The top four teams will earn the right to play in the NPF Championship Series. The Championship Series has been hosted by the Cardinal Youth Softball League in Kimberly, Wis. for each of the past two seasons, but league officials are expected to announce within the next few days the new location of the event for the 2009 season.
