Nords Take First Matchup of the Season against the Generals
November 24, 2021 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Maine Nordiques News Release
The Nordiques took on the Northeast Generals for the first time this season to write the next chapter in the Nordiques Generals rivalry.
The first period was a crazy back and forth battle, but the Generals got it going with an early rush goal less than two minutes in to make it 1-0. Just three minutes later Patrick Schmiedlin would get his first of 3 goals tonight to tie it up at 1. Brendon Gibbons would charge towards the front of the net and push another goal home exactly 1 minute later to make it 2-1. The Nordiques would score 2 goals on two shots and the Generals would make a goalie swap. The Nordiques would then head to the power play and Patrick Schmiedlin would pot his second on a powerful one timer that leaked through the Generals goalie and in the back of the net to make it three straight Nordiques goals. 3-1 Nords after the first period.
The second period saw no scoring, but some great back and forth action with some solid stops by Avery Sturtz. Both teams would also go 0/2 on power plays and we saw some brief 4 on 4 action.
In the third period the Generals got a goal with some great forechecking and made it a 1 goal affair. With less than ten minutes to go, the Nordiques would get a power play opportunity and just as it was expiring Patrick Schmiedlin would cap off his hat trick on another power play, assist from Jonny Meriers who now has 7 points in his last 5 games played. The Nordiques would head to the penalty kill with 4:41 left in the third and the Generals would pull their goalie for a 6 on 4 power play; but Avery Sturtz stood tall in net in the game, some great blocked shots from Pellerin, Connor and Orloff. The Nordiques would hold on for a 4-2 win.
Game two is tomorrow at 1pm when the Nordiques look to stay hot and sweep the Generals before Thanksgiving.
