Long Island Rough Riders News Release

(Plainview, N.Y., August 6, 2004) - The Long Island Rough Riders buried their playoff hopes tonight with a 3-0 loss in North Carolina against the Wilmington Hammerheads. With a record of seven wins and ten losses and only two games left in the season, the team cannot reach a 0,500 record anymore.

Wilmington put a lot of pressure on the Rough Riders right from the opening whistle. Even though the home team did not have any real opportunities to score, Long Island never found into the game. In the 40th minute George Corrie got ejected after being issued the second yellow card, and the Hammerheads had to play a man down for the rest of the game.

Shortly before halftime Wilmington could score on a corner-kick from Kenny Bundy. Warren Ukah put a header past Long Island goalkeeper Dan Sirota to give his team a 1-0 lead.

In the second half Long Island tried to take advantage of playing a man up. "After being under a lot of pressure in first half, the team finally came into the game in the second half. They tried hard to get the equalizer," said Head Coach Ronan Wiseman. But in the 71st minute forward Chris Bagley was able to score the second goal that night for Wilmington on a counter-attack.

After that Long Island pushed everybody up top. A few good opportunities could not be finished, on the contrary the Rough Riders got punished for their offensive efforts. On another breakaway Bagley was again able to put the ball into the net in the 90th minute to make the score 3-0.

Head Coach Ronan Wiseman commented after the game. "I am disappointed that we did not make the playoffs. But I always knew it would be tough to reach with the record that we've had after the first eight games."
