August 4, 2003 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Anaheim Storm News Release
East Rutherford, NJâThe New Jersey Storm of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) has announced that the club will be relocating to Anaheim, California for the 2003-2004 season.
The Storm spent the first two years in franchise history at the Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands, posting a combined record of 8-24 (5-11 in 2002 and 3-13 in 2003). The team averaged 5,302 fans per game in 2003.
The team, which will play its home games at the Arrowhead Pond (also the home of the National Hockey League's Anaheim Mighty Ducks), will be managed by the arena's owner and operator, Ogden Facility Management Corporation. Ogden will assume an ownership share, with the original Storm ownership group still involved in the franchise. Jim Brady will remain with the club as General Manager and Peter Vipond will stay on as Head Coach for 2003-2004.
The move to the West Coast marks the second in as many months for the NLL. Last month, the former Albany Attack franchise announced their relocation to San Jose, California and the HP Pavilion (home of the NHL's San Jose Sharks).
The Storm made international headlines last season by signing and playing Ginny Capicchioni in goal, the first female player in NLL and American professional team sports history.
Last season, the Storm ranked first in the NLL in a number of team statistical categories including: fewest penalties and penalty minutes. The team ranked second in penalty killing, fifth in face-off percentage, and sixth in loose balls. Also, rookie forward Marc Morley became the first Stormer ever to be named to the NLL All-Rookie Team after scoring 20 goals, nine assists, and 35 loose balls in 11 games played.
