CHICAGO - Nikki Stanton has informed the Chicago Red Stars she will not return to the team for the upcoming 2020 National Women's Soccer League season in order to pursue a playing opportunity in Europe.
"I want to thank all of Chicago for the last two years," Stanton said. "It's been an absolute blast. I've made life long friends and unforgettable memories. Shoutout to Chicago for being the best fans to play in front of. It was an honor representing this city and club."
"I want to thank Nikki for her time in Chicago," Red Stars Head Coach Rory Dames said. "She was an incredible locker room presence and the perfect example of 'Chicago grit' on the field. We wish her all the best with her new opportunity. She will always be a part of our Red Stars family."
Stanton joined the Red Stars via trade in January of 2018. In two seasons with Chicago, the midfielder made 40 appearances for the Red Stars, helping Chicago reach the 2019 NWSL Championship.
